Sassa Grant-In-Aid

Eligibility Criteria:

• Existing Grant Recipient: You must already be receiving a Disability Grant, Older Person’s Grant, or War Veteran’s Grant.
• Need for Full-Time Care: You must require full-time care due to a physical or mental condition, as confirmed by a medical doctor.
• Residency: Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
• Means Test: No specific means test applies for the Grant-in-Aid itself, but you must meet the requirements of your existing grant.

2. Grant Amount:

• As of 2024, the Grant-in-Aid amount is R540 per month (subject to annual review).

3. How to Apply:

To apply for the Grant-in-Aid, you must visit the nearest SASSA office with the following documents:

• Proof that you are already receiving a qualifying social grant.
• A medical report or assessment confirming that you need full-time care due to a disability or condition.
• Your valid South African ID.
• The caregiver’s ID (if applicable).
• Proof of residency.

4. Application Process:

• Visit a SASSA office and submit the required documents.
• SASSA may require a medical assessment to confirm that you need constant care.
• Once your application is submitted, SASSA will process it and notify you of the outcome.

5. What Happens After Approval:

• If approved, the grant will be paid monthly along with your existing social grant.
• If your application is denied, you have the option to appeal the decision.

6. Payment Methods:

• Payments are made in conjunction with your current social grant, typically through a SASSA card, direct deposit, or at a pay point.

7. Conditions of the Grant:

• The Grant-in-Aid continues as long as you require full-time care and are still receiving the primary social grant.
• If your health condition improves and you no longer need full-time care, the Grant-in-Aid may be stopped.
